Interview with Gilda Neiman: Chapter Zero Brussels' New Chairperson
Chapter Zero Brussels is excited to welcome Gilda Neiman as the new Chairperson of the Board of Directors. We extend our heartfelt thanks to Natacha for her dedicated service over the last 2 years. Natacha will continue to serve as a board member. Chapter Zero Brussels has a practice of rotating the chair role every 2 years, ensuring fresh perspectives and leadership.
We sat down with Gilda to discuss her vision and journey:
Why did you accept the challenge to be the new chairperson for Chapter Zero Brussels (CZB)?
Three years ago I left a long career in banking to channel my experience towards tackling climate change. I felt a compelling need to contribute to the planet's health and make the world a better place. After reflecting on the most pressing issues, and discussing with friends and colleagues, it became clear that climate change was where I most wanted to make an impact.
Initially, I envisioned integrating sustainability into corporate strategies by becoming a certified independent director with a focus on sustainability, leveraging my extensive corporate experience. A few colleagues and I also thought about starting a discussion group of business leaders concerned with climate change, to exchange on the problems they were facing to deal with it, and potential solutions. The idea was to turn this into an NGO if it was successful. When we learned about Chapter Zero starting in Belgium, we realised this was the perfect platform to have these discussions and to connect with others on this important challenge and the role of governance. We joined the first cohort of the Director Climate Journey, and that marked the beginning of my journey with CZB. I applied to join the board and have been deeply involved ever since. Taking on the Chair role now feels like the right time for me to intensify my efforts and support the continued growth and impact of Chapter Zero Brussels.
What have you learned in the past as a board director that will contribute to your role as chairperson?
Serving on the board of Chapter Zero Brussels and as Chair of Greenomy has been incredibly enriching. I've learned a great deal about the responsibilities of a Chair and I'm eager to apply this knowledge for CZB and to keep learning. My time on the board of CZB has solidified my commitment to fostering effective climate governance within companies. I've also greatly enjoyed working with my fellow board members, partners, and supporters. The collaborative atmosphere has been inspiring and I look forward to building on this as Chair.
How would you like CZB to evolve and grow?
I envision Chapter Zero Brussels achieving more impact by working with our committed members and spreading this involvement to additional companies. We need to grow and maintain the momentum with those eager to make a difference. Our goal is for company boards to deeply engage and learn from their membership with CZB. I am looking forward to working with both our longstanding and new board members, bringing in fresh ideas and continuing on our growth trajectory. We need to help more companies understand their role and the competitive advantages of strategic sustainability actions.
What inspires you outside of your working life?
I regularly practise yoga and meditation, which are great sources of inspiration for me. After a session, I see the world in a completely different light. These practices help me stay grounded and energised, enabling me to bring my best self to Chapter Zero Brussels and everything else I am involved with. I also enjoy hiking in nature, enjoying beautiful spaces right in the middle of Brussels, and all over the world, with my family.
