Key Takeaways from Our Recent Webinar on Nature & Biodiversity: A Strategic Issue for the Boardroom

We recently hosted a webinar together with KPMG. You can watch the recording here:

In a time of increasing regulatory and environmental pressures, companies are facing significant shifts in how they manage sustainability. During our recent webinar, Fiorella Sanchez, Sustainability & Biodiversity Manager at KPMG, explored the critical intersections of regenerative agriculture, biodiversity, and upcoming regulations such as the EU’s deforestation-free regulation.

Regenerative Agriculture: A Global Perspective

Regenerative agriculture is gaining traction as a vital solution for sustainable food systems. However, its implementation varies widely depending on geography, sector, and specific environmental challenges. The key takeaway? It cannot stand alone.

As highlighted, regenerative practices must be coupled with strategies to enhance water-use efficiency, optimize carbon capture, and improve yields. A one-size-fits-all approach is not feasible; what works in one region may not apply in another. Companies must tailor their practices to local conditions while aligning them with global sustainability goals.

Deforestation-Free Regulation: Time to Act Is Now

The upcoming deforestation-free regulation represents a seismic shift for businesses operating in or exporting to the EU. Initially set to take effect in December 2024, its implementation has been delayed to December 2025, providing a narrow window for companies to prepare.

This delay should not be mistaken for leniency. As emphasized, “If you don’t have the information, you cannot enter the products into Europe. It’s as simple as that.” Businesses must begin mapping their supply chains and assessing their exposure to deforestation risks immediately. Proactive engagement is essential to mitigate regulatory and reputational risks.

Nature and Biodiversity Strategy: A Holistic Approach

Fiorella Sanchez shared insights into KPMG’s comprehensive nature and biodiversity strategy. The firm has embraced the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) framework to assess their global impacts and dependencies on natural ecosystems. This approach helps KPMG and its clients identify critical areas for action, from reforestation projects in Belgium to broader initiatives worldwide.

The key lesson? Effective biodiversity strategies require both local action and global coordination. By aligning local projects with international standards, companies can drive meaningful impact and maintain compliance with emerging regulations.

Engagement and Collaboration: The Path Forward

The webinar underscored the importance of collaboration. As Vanessa Van Bergen, Executive Director of Chapter Zero Brussels, noted, partnerships with organizations like The Shift and active participation from industry stakeholders are crucial. With over 50 participants engaged in this session, the appetite for learning and action is clear.

Final Thoughts

As 2024 draws to a close, the urgency for businesses to align with sustainability regulations and practices has never been greater. The key message from our webinar is clear: act now, collaborate widely, and adapt strategies to local and global contexts.
