Navigating the Future: How Board Leadership and Continuous Education Drive Social and Environmental Impact

A testimony from Beatrice de Mahieu - Independent Non-executive Director

As a non-executive Director of the Proximus Board, representing the State, I've had the opportunity to witness firsthand the critical role technology plays in shaping our society. During my career in major Tech and Media companies, I’ve always been driven by a passion for innovation and technology, but also a deep commitment to ensuring that progress benefits everyone, not just a select few.

When proximus proposed that I complete the Director Climate Journey programme – provided by Vlerick and Chapter Zero Brussels – together with an Independent Non-Executive colleague Board member, it was for me the opportunity to add the environmental expertise to my digital inclusion and social engagement, with my role also as CEO of BeCode, a social impact coding school in Belgium, which mission is to train vulnerable citizens in tech skills and to accompany the towards a job.

At Proximus, we recognize the power of digital transformation to bridge gaps and create opportunities, especially for those traditionally left behind. But as a company, it’s also about building a sustainable future for all, and where the Board has a profound engagement on both environmental impact and social inclusion.

Humans and the planet are deeply linked in societal well being. We cannot see this as not connected.

The Director Climate Journey training was the perfect match of science-based theory, and powerful testimonials of companies and board members sharing best practices and collaborative exercises.

I can only highly recommend this training, for Directors who really want to be the change for a sustainable future, including people, planet and profit.
